Liberty Holdings Limited – the growing giant!

With a market capitalisation of around R20bn and operations in seven countries, Liberty Holdings Limited is South Africa's third largest life insurer and part of the giant Standard Bank Group.

A true blue-chip company, Liberty is a household name and one of the best-known and most pedigreed organisations in South Africa - in addition to being one of the largest property owners in the country!

The company offers a comprehensive range of life insurance and healthcare products as well as asset management services to both the individual and corporate markets.

All major asset classes are managed and it is Liberty's goal to be the preferred supplier of quality, value-added financial and associated services, both locally and internationally.

First registered in 1957 with a capital of R84 000, the company was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 1962. Only 20 years later, new corporate headquarters were opened in Braamfontein, Johannesburg and assets exceeded R2 billion.

The next ten years were characterised by a number of acquisitions and by 1992 Liberty was ranked the fifth largest company in South Africa, in terms of market capitalisation on the JSE.

In 1997 Liberty celebrated its 40th anniversary – in the same year, total assets exceeded R100 billion and earnings attributable to shareholders reached a record R3,08 billion.

A few years later Standard Bank acquired control of the company from founder and chairman, Donald Gordon. In 2001 Stanlib was formed through a combination of Liberty and Standard Bank’s asset management businesses.

Their combined strengths and expertise has seen Liberty surge ahead.
